Careers for Game of Thrones Characters: 16 Career Paths Based on Myers Briggs Personality Types

Game of Thrones Careers based on Myers-Briggs

Did you ever wonder where you might find your favorite Game of Thrones characters working in our world if they were lifted out of Westeros, brought back to life (for an unfortunate many) or if they simply decided to no longer pursue the throne?

We have been wondering the same thing.

So we decided to do some educated guesswork using the Myers-Briggs personality indicator to figure out what career paths the heroes and villains of the Game of Thrones universe would take.

We categorized 16 different characters into their Myers-Briggs personality, and hypothesized what job would best suit them.

Here is what we found out:

Warning: This infographic and article may contain spoilers.

What is the Myers-Briggs personality test?

To give a little history, the Myers-Briggs personality test is a questionnaire that determines one’s psychological preferences and perceptions of the world. The indicator also determines what kind of decisions a person may make and what they take into consideration before doing so.

The personality indicator uses the following parameters to categorize you favorite Game of Thrones characters into each of the 16 possible categories:

  • I – Introversion vs. E – Extroversion
  • N – Intuiting vs. S – Sensing
  • T – Thinking vs. F – Feeling
  • J – Judging vs. P – Perceiving

My take on the infographic

Here is my breakdown of each personality type, the matching Game of Thrones character and their career potential. I categorized the 16 personality types into 4 sub-categories of Analysts, Diplomats, Sentinels, and Explorers.

Analysts

Analysts are people who put rationality and impartiality at the forefront of their decision-making.  They are independent, open-minded, imaginative and practical.  Analysts are excellent strategic thinkers but sometimes struggle in social or romantic pursuits.

001INTJ_Tywin_Lannister.jpg

Any man who must say, “I am the king” is no true king. I’ll make sure you understand that when I’ve won your war for you.

I could always see Tywin Lannister as a high-powered lawyer or expensive business consultant. A fixer if you will.

He comes in like The Wolf from Pulp Fiction, assesses the situation, gives out curt instructions and expects everyone to obey his command.

As such, he is our INTJ.

INTJs are one of the rarest and most strategically capable personalities. They are imaginative and strategic thinkers, with a plan for everything.

They are best fit for “Lone Wolf” positions where they work alone or in very small groups. They need focus to maximize their creativity.

Ideal Occupations: Mechanical Engineer, Software Engineer, Lawyer, and Freelance Consultant

002INTP_Maester-Luwin.jpg

I pulled you into the world. Both of you. I’ve seen both your faces almost every day since, and for that I consider myself very, very lucky.

Maester Luwin, and likely many maester’s for that matter, falls under INTP personality type.

They are rare, innovative inventors with an unquenchable thirst for knowledge.  They pride themselves on their inventiveness and creativity.

They are solitary, eccentric and independent, so you will not find an INTP in most corporate positions.  All they want to do is immerse themselves in interesting projects.

I can see Maester Luwin finding his place in our world as a career scientist, working away in the lab, making discoveries and immersing himself in his work.

Ideal Occupations: Mathematician, Systems Analyst, and Career Scientists

003ENTJ_Xaro-Xhoan.jpg

Do you think the path from poverty to wealth is always pure and honorable? I have done many things, Khaleesi, that a righteous man would condemn. And here I am, with no regrets.

Like Tywin, Xaro Daxos is shreud and cunning, but he has had to overcome much in his life to become the richest man in Qarth and as such embodies many of the characteristics of the ENTJ.

They are natural-born leaders.  ENTJs embody charisma, confidence and authority.  They draw people together under a common goal.  They are often ruthlessly rational, using their determination to achieve whatever goal they have set out for themselves.

They crave leadership, responsibility, growth and opportunity,  ENTJs enjoy managing others to get a job done well.

I envision Xaro as a judge, handing down his own version of justice, and perhaps cutting the occassional back courtroom deal to help line his pockets.

Ideal Occupations: Corporate Strategists, Lawyers, and Judges

004ENTP_Tyrion-Lannister.jpg

I wish I was the monster you think I am! I wish I had enough poison for the whole pack of you! I would gladly give my life to watch you all swallow it!

Ah, Tyrion, my favorite character.

I see Tyrion working as a psychologist. He has empathy for those with physical or mental disabilities, but loves to debate those in power.

Because of these characteristics, he’s our ENTP.

ENTPs are known as “The Debaters” – they often play the role of devil’s advocate.  ENTPs thrive when they are tearing arguments and/or standing beliefs apart.  Usually ENTPs do not have an end goal for this sort of disruption; they do it simply for sport.

Ideal Occupations: Lawyers, Psychologists, and Sales Representatives

Diplomats

Diplomats are known to be empathetic and cooperative with others.  They often play the role of a mediator in their workplace or in their social groups.  They are warm and empathetic people but they sometimes struggle when faced with making decisions based on rationality.

005INFJ_Daenerys_Targaryen.jpg

I am Daenerys Stormborn and I will take what is mine with fire and blood.

I like to think of Daenerys working as a life coach, giving her strength and confidence to those that need it.

INFJs are very rare (like Targaryen’s), making up less than 1% of the populations.  They have an inborn sense of morality.  Along with this, they have a sense of judgement that leads them to make steps to achieve goals and make a lasting impact on others.

They are often soft-spoken with strong opinions.  They fight tirelessly for an idea and rarely work towards personal gains.

Ideal Occupations: Doctors, Life Coaches, Counselors, and Spiritual Guides

006INFP_Jon_Snow.jpg

Sometimes there is no happy choice, only one less grievous than the others.

Jon Snow, always doing the right thing, looking at the bigger picture. He’s an INFP, an idealists, looking for good in even the worst of people and events.  INFPs are often mistaken for calm and reserved but they have an inner fame and passion within them.

When met with a decision, INFPs often look to honor and morality.

I see Jon working as a writer, putting forth ideas of  morality and justice and not understanding why the world does not share his exact same view.

Ideal Occupations: Poets, Writers, and Actors

007ENFJ_Eddard-Stark.jpg

Know the men who follow you and let them know you. Don’t ask your men to die for a stranger.

Eddard (Ned) Stark can put his natural-born leadership and passion to good use as a social worker.

ENFJs have inborn confidence that attracts others to achieve and do good. ENFJs like to help others improve themselves and their community.

Ideal Occupations: Social Worker, Rehabilitation Counselor, Family Therapist, and School Counselor

008ENFP_Renly-Baratheon.jpg

I propose that you dismount, bend your knee, and swear me your allegiance.

I see Renly’s “real world” career as a journalist, constantly networking and making connections. He can use his charisma to get people to open up and give him insider information.

Renly’s free spirit makes him our ENFP.

They are often the center of the party, taking enjoyment in social and emotional connections they are constantly making with others.  They are curious and see life as a big puzzle where everything is connected.

Ideal Occupations: Writers, Journalists, and TV Reporters

Sentinels

Sentinels are hard-working and practical people.  They excel when met with opportunities to create order and stability.  Sentinels are drawn to difficult tasks but can be inflexible and unwilling to accept different ways of thinking.

009ISTJ_Sandor_Clegane.jpg

Of course you are. You’re almost there and you’re afraid you won’t make it. The closer you get, the worse the fear gets. No point in trying to hide behind that face. I know fear when I see it. Seen it a lot.

The ISTJ personality is the most common, making up about 13% of the world’s population.  Their defining characteristics are integrity, practical logic and tireless dedication to duty.  ISTJs take responsibility for their actions and take pride in their work.

ISTJs rely on fact and often take pragmatic, no-nonsense courses of action.

I can see Sandor working as a police officer, unfortunately, he may be a somewhat corrupt police officer, but he definitely belongs in a position of power and authority.

Ideal Occupations: Military Officer, Police Officer, and Judge

010ISFJ_Catelyn-Stark.jpg

On my honor as a Tully, on my honor as a Stark, I will trade your boy’s life for Robb’s. A son for a son.

An elementary school teacher seems like the perfect fit for Catelyn. She is a loyal protector and can connect with children.

This is why she fits the ISFJ personality type. They are very dedicated and warm protectors.  They are always prepared to defend their loved ones.  Despite being introverts, ISFJs have the ability to connect with others on an intimate level.

Ideal Occupations: Nurses, Elementary School Teachers, and Social Workers

011ESTJ_Khal_Drogo.jpg

To my son, The Stallion Who Will Mount the Word, I will also pledge a gift. I will give him the Iron Chair that his mother’s father sat upon. I will give him Seven Kingdoms. I, Drogo, will do this. I will take my Khalasar west to where the world ends…

I chuckle a little thinking of Khal Drogo as a business administrator. I would certainly do whatever he told me to do :-).

ESTJs embody tradition and order.  They understand what is right versus what is wrong.  They are known for their clear advice and guidance.  ESTJs are known for bringing communities and families together.

ESTJs hate disorganization, laziness, ineptitude and most of all, dishonesty.

Ideal Occupations: Community Organizers, Financial Officers, and Business Administrators

012ESFJ_Sansa_Stark.jpg

I am Sansa Stark of Winterfell. This is my home. And you can’t frighten me.

Like her mother, I can see Sansa also being a teacher. She’s more social than Catelyn, which is why she’s an ESFJ rather than a ISFJ.

ESFJs are extremely social people.  Often in the spotlight, ESFJs are leaders who take their teams to victory and happiness!

ESFJs are very concerned with appearance and social status.  They are often organizers/hosts of parties and social gatherings, making sure everyone is happy.

Ideal Occupations: Administrators, Accountants, and Teachers

Explorers

Explorers are the most spontaneous group.  They excel in situations where they are tasked to think quickly on their feet and spring into action.  They are masters of tools and techniques.  Explorers’ greatest fault is undertaking great risk without much forethought.

013ISTP_AryaStark.jpg

A bruise is a lesson… and each lesson makes us better.

It’s hard for me to see Arya as anything other than a crazy assassin, but if we are assigning her a more wholesome role, I could see her working as a mechanic. I think the blue collar nature of the job, allowing her to get her hands dirty and stay away from dresses, would appeal to her.

ISTPs are, by nature, experimental and curious.  They explore the world with their eyes and their hands.  ISTPs are natural makers, building both useful and superfluous things while learning about the world around them.

ISTPs love to pull things apart and use their know-how to put them back together.

Ideal Occupations: Mechanic, Engineers, and Graphic Designers

014ISFP_Shae.jpg

I am yours and you are mine.

Shae’s profession does exist in our world, but I could also see her as an artist. She would never fit in an office, her short-term work as Sansa’s handmaiden made that clear.

She’s the perfect ISFP, who often use their skills and even their choices to push the limits of social conventions. ISFPs enjoy upsetting expectations with their own experiments.  They live in a colorful world, inspired by the people and ideas around them.

ISFPs hate sitting in fluorescent-lit offices.  They are more likely to take risks and do something they are passionate about in lieu of big money.

Ideal Occupations: Artists, Musicians, and Photographers

015ESTP_Jamie-Lannister.jpg

So many vows. They make you swear and swear. Defend the king. Obey the king. Obey your father. Protect the innocent. Defend the weak. What if your father despises the king? What if the king massacres the innocent?

Jamie needs to be his own boss, that’s why he’ll be an entrepreneur, running his own business.

He’s an ESTP. They are smart, energetic and often the center of attention in a large group of people.  They are often impulsive and tend to fly by the seat of their pants.  ESTPs may also find themselves fixing their mistakes as they go rather that calculating their moves beforehand.

Ideal Occupations: Entrepreneurs and Freelancers

016ESFP_Ygritte.jpg

You know nothing Jon Snow.

Ygritte’s place is outside, leading adventure tours around the world. She’s an ESFP because she is spontaneous and enthusiastic. She shares her energy with all those around her.

ESFPs are unrivaled in their generosity in terms of their own time and energy.  They happily help others with advice and emotional support whenever needed.

For the record, I’m totally down for Ygritte’s adventure touring company :-).

Ideal Occupations: Entertainers, Event Planners, Sales Representatives, and Tour Guides
